Theatre within artwork

Key characteristics:

  • Composition

  • Sequence

  • Going/ seeing

  • Staging

  • Presentation

  • Personality

  • Real/ incentive perception

  • Stereotypes

FILM STILLS : CINDY SHERMAN

  • Male gaze and film/ cinema

  • Black and white

  • Cut at torso

  • Emphasis on shadows

Giving the image an action, speech, story or emotion.

Without context do they have it?

Or do we give it?

Visuals:

  • What do they show

  • What do we get / see / feel?

Spacing, colour, size of background emphasising emotions

E.g. LEFT. Central gap and light colours  elongate the face.

  • Light shadowing features to emphasise emotion.

  • How real is a ‘real’ set up of a scene?

  •  Changes the situation, it’s happening not HAPPENED

  • Is space entitled? Taken or given? Power possessive/ observed.

  • Establishing moments.

  • - Snap shot of moment but continued story

  • Matthew Barney

  • Video epic

With consideration to these characteristics, I worked in a small group to create some atmospheric, story like images.

I find these images to be quite spooky. The first one is concerning due to the visible human characteristics. These almost animate the cone, giving it a sense of being and feeling. In both images the high contrast of the black and white images effectively remove the 'real world' from the scene, replacing it with a mysterious room. Causing the viewer to question the situation, to fill in the missing context with their imagination.
