History and Art

“Historians seek knowledge of the past using historical sources”. Historians cover all sorts of topics and often combine their research methods with topics from other disciplines e.g Art Historian, Cultural Historians etc. There are lots of different ways to research history, some examples listed by Heidelberg University are Palaegraphy, Diplomatics, Archives, Chronology, Publications and Epigraphy. They gather non-numerical information with the intention to learn opinions, theories, and find numerical data used to make and support points.

Here’s an example of Palaeography in practice, the deciphering of a 1576 document written by Queen Elizabeth I. The author ‘Morristown Archivist’, uses this document to educate others on basic tips for Palaeography. He states that the letter forms differ to modern styles, gives examples of what letters may look like and sets a recognition task allowing the reader to trial this skill.

Abstract painter Sarah Grilo found inspiration from her move to New York in 1962. Using imagery and text from “signs, billboards, torn posters, newspaper headlines and graffiti”, she created this piece titled Add. The result is characterised with free flowing marks resembling text, aspects of graffiti, magazine extracts and illegible scribbles that resemble words. Much like in Palaeography, the ‘text’ can be described with repeated patterns inspired by a location during a period of time.

Influenced by Sarah Grilo’s work and the complex style variations of Palaeography, I have created a piece in response to ‘ADD’. Using layered pieces of unwanted scraps of notes, an envelope, a map, water colour ( paint and pencils), I ripped the text in half. This resembled text but would be difficult to decipher, like the documented example of Palaeography above. Watercolour pencils add additional marks that hint towards text even though they’re just scribbles, leaving the viewer to question what was originally written.
