The two lighthouses are positioned towards the right. The smallest has classic, faded, red and white colouring. Minimal texture is visible other than darkened windows. At the top of the lighthouse there is a flag and a connection point for assorted flags between two lighthouses. This directs attention and links differences between the two lighthouses: colourful, small, and faded against a monotone, tall textured structure. The rocks below are dark and shadowed, a natural foundation to the structure. This classic appearance may be lacking in textural detail however, the muted striped pattern (centre piece) helps to add a little warmth and excitement to an otherwise majorly cool tone piece.
This second lighthouse shows individual, grey bricks. Most marks are ‘blocky’ and the lighter grey sections look smooth in comparison to the darker sections. The top of the lighthouse shows a modern light and frame structure. The curved, dome roof is unique to the rest of the straight structure. The inclusion of this dome adds a level of structural complexity. The complexity increase is an indication that this taller lighthouse is the new build.
A variety of size boats display flags, surrounding the lighthouses. The small sailboats have their sails out, catching minimal wind. The larger boats have taken them down. The water below the boats is darker with less highlights, it's calmer, there are less waves to move boats.As the boats appear to be facing the lighthouses, it makes sense that they would slow/ stop in a calm section of water to view. The boat bases are dark, blending into the water's shadows. The sails vary from off white to a warm tone brown/ beige colour. Sails can change colour with age and wear, implying that the audience (on the boats), are of a mixed age group/ wealth. The newer, larger boats with brighter sails owned by the wealthiest of sailors.
