The body positioning symbolises a link between this woman and her abortion. The foetal position is a vulnerable state, but also one that some people find comfort in. Elbows and knees meeting to create a protective barrier to the outside world. She is protecting her body, herself. This ‘barrier’ meets above her stomach, emphasising the source of pain (emotional and physical). The tension held in her hand could show her attempt to hold onto comfort and support, in this case, support found within the pillow. As the pillow is placed vertically rather than horizontal, it may also suggest it’s more than her head that requires support. Her chest and perhaps stomach are also rested here, attempting to add comfort whilst shielding these areas from view.
